Another edition of the Steve Stevens Outdoor Senior Nationals concluded over the weekend, after a highly-competitive six days of seniors tennis in Vancouver. Action was played out in five host clubs across the city, the Jericho Tennis Club, Shaughnessy Golf and Country and Club, the Arbutus Club, Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club, and Richmond Country Club. Just two of last year’s singles champions were able to defend their title and secure back-to-back wins, with the rest of this year’s winners digging deep to reach the height of excellency in their age categories from August 20-26.

Women’s over-70 singles champion Mary Ann Gaskin of Ontario recorded her second straight year of capturing both the singles and doubles trophies in her events. The tournament top-seed defeated B.C.-native and No. 2 seed Jandi Fraser 6-1, 6-3 in Saturday’s final. No. 3 seed Gisela Haidemarie Nouisser of Ontario completed the pattern, as she captured third place with a walkover win against British Coloumbia’s Eileen Clark.

In doubles, Gaskin was alongside Patricia Maclachlan as the over-70 draw’s No. 1 seeds. Gaskin and Maclachlan defeated Heidemarie Nouisser and Anne Rungi of Ontario 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

The men’s over-75 draw also featured a repeating champion. No. 1 seed Shaheer Mikhail won his second over-75 men’s singles title in as many years on Saturday in Vancouver. He beat No. 3 seed Horst Dammholz 6-1, 6-0 to claim the trophy. Ontario’s Mikhail also triumphed in doubles. Alongside Guido Weber, the winners of last year’s over-75 doubles trophy were seeded first. The pair ran into few problems, handing big losses to their opponents throughout the week. In the final, Mikhail and Weber defeated No. 2 seeds Ali Bacha and Jay Bochner 6-4, 6-2 in the final for the sweep.

Other players who registered sweeps at the Senior Nationals include Craig Hiddleston, who captured the men’s over-50 singles and doubles titles with partner Gary Meanchos. The doubles trophy wasn’t Meachos’ only piece of hardware he picked up this weekend. Meanchos won the men’s over-55 singles crown, to follow-up his win in the over-50 division last year. Patricia Babcock, Janice Holloway, Robert Beattuer, Gaston Blais, and Louise Langston are all the other players who collected trophies from both singles and doubles events at the 2017 Steve Stevens Outdoor Senior National Championships.
