PELIWO INTO KELOWNA FUTURES FINAL
July 6, 2014
Filip Peliwo (Vancouver) will play for the $15,000 Capri & Chubb Insurance Kelowna Futures trophy after the 20-year-old advanced past fellow Canadian Philip Bester (North Vancouver) in the semifinals 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday.
It was a close duel between the top-seeded Peliwo and No. 3 seed Bester, but in the end Peliwo was stronger on serve. Hitting seven aces, he only gave up one break point while going three-for-eight on break chances on Bester’s serve.
With the win, Peliwo will be competing in his second straight championship match. He also reached the final day of the Richmond event last week, where he fell to American Dennis Novikov.
Novikov will not be his final foe in Kelowna, as the No. 4 seed was ousted by No. 2-seeded Aussie Benjamin Mitchell 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the semifinals.
Peliwo and Mitchell have played each other twice before, with the young Canadian defeating Mitchell just last week in the $15K Richmond Country Club Futures semifinals and the Aussie picking up a win in Saskatoon last summer.
The final will take place at the Parkinson Recreation Centre in Kelowna on Sunday at 1 p.m. local time/4 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available here.
