Second matches concluded on Thursday at the Gatineau National Bank Challenger with Carol Zhao, Peter Polansky, Philip Bester, and Filip Peliwo attempting to join their fellow Canadians, who won yesterday, in the quarter-finals.

Peter Polansky (Thornhill, ON) made quick work qualifier Finn Tearney of New Zealand 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final eight. Next up was an all-Canadian encounter between Philip Bester (Vancouver, BC) and Filip Peliwo (Vancouver, BC). Bester came out aggressively in the first set to take the lead, but Peliwo rebounded in sets two and three to come away with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. Peliwo and Polansky will meet in Friday’s quarter-finals.

On the women’s side, American Ellie Halbauer got the better of Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON) 6-2, 6-1. She will next face her compatriot Jacqueline Cako.

In women’s doubles, a pair of Canadian teams advanced to the semifinals thanks to wins by Bianca Andreescu (Toronto, ON) and Charlotte Robillard-Millette (Blainville, QC) as well as Erin Routliffe (Caledon, ON) and Zhao.

Friday will feature two more all-Canadian matches in the men’s draw. In addition to Peliwo versus Polansky, Frank Dancevic will take on Denis Shapovalov. For her part, Bianca Andreescu will meet American Lauren Albanese in the quarter-finals.
