Peter Polansky is now one win away from the Australian Open main draw after coming through his second round qualifying match on Thursday night in Melbourne.
Polansky posted his second consecutive straight sets victory of the tournament, defeating Mirza Basic of Bosnia 6-4, 6-3. In the opening round, he topped France’s Tristan Lamasine 6-2, 6-4.
Polansky will be looking to make his first appearance in the Australian Open main draw since 2009. He’ll have to beat Russian Andrey Rublev to get there.
In women’s qualifying, Françoise Abanda was defeated in the second round 6-4, 6-4 by American Taylor Townsend.
The draw ceremony for the first Grand Slam of the season was also held on Thursday night. Seeded third in the men’s draw, Milos Raonic will open his campaign against German Dustin Brown for the second Major in a row. He is in the same half as defending champion Novak Djokovic. For her part, Sydney semifinalist Eugenie Bouchard will play American Louisa Chirico in the first round. She is in the top quarter of the draw women’s draw with World No. 1 Angelique Kerber.
