In his first match since sustaining an ankle sprain in Madrid, Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver) was eliminated in the opening round of Roland Garros with a 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-1 loss to Portugal’s Joao Sousa on Tuesday.
Heading into the match without much preparation, Pospisil comported himself well but could not overcome the talented clay courter, who was coming off an appearance in the Geneva final last week. After falling behind two sets, including dropping a close second-set tiebreaker, Pospisil was broken three times in the third en route to the defeat.
The 24-year-old will now turn his attention to the doubles draw, where he and American partner Jack Sock are seeded No. 2. Pospisock will face Dominican-Brazilian pair Victor Estrella Burgos and Joao Souza in the first round.
