Vasek Pospisil recovered from a clumsy first set to defeat Argentine Diego Schwartzman in a third set tiebreak 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). In the second round, Pospisil will face Joao Sousa of Portugal. He is also the reigning Miami doubles finalist alongside American Jack Sock. PospiSock will begin their title quest later this week.
Eugenie Bouchard couldn’t duplicate Pospisil’s comeback victory as she fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic. This is the third year in a row that Bouchard has lost her opening match in Miami. Her next scheduled tournament is on clay in Charleston beginning in two weeks.
