Milos Raonic (Thornhill, Ont.) captured his first match on clay of the 2015 season on Wednesday, ousting Portuguese Joao Sousa 6-3, 7-6(4) to advance into the third round of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
It was a straightforward victory for the tournament’s No. 4 seed, who didn’t face a single break point throughout the 86-minute match. He hit 12 aces, winning 88 per cent of his first serve points and losing only 10 points on serve all match.
Raonic’s next opponent at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event will be No. 16 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain. The 24-year-old Canadian has won all three of their previous meetings, including in the same round at last year’s Monte-Carlo Masters.
