Men’s singles kicked off the tennis events at the TO2015 Pan Am Games on Friday at the Canadian Tennis Centre, with Canada’s Brayden Schnur opening his bid for a gold medal with a win over Luis Martinez of Venezuela.

Though Schnur said he was familiar with Martinez from previous tournaments, this was their first head-to-head encounter. Serving well, Schnur took 90 minutes to close out the match 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court.

“I needed to stay aggressive and take it to him,” Schnur said following the match. “Most of the South American guys like to grind it out and play longer rallies. I just had to cut it down and make it shorter.”

Schnur will face No. 7 seed Darian King of Barbados in the second round. No. 13 seed Philip Bester and No. 16 seed Peter Polansky both had byes into the second round and will open their tournament on Saturday.

Men’s singles will continue on Saturday with the second round followed by women’s singles and men’s doubles. Mixed doubles will kick off on Sunday. The tennis event of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will take place July 10-16 at the Canadian Tennis Centre. The complete draws and results will be available here and regular updates will be posted on tenniscanada.com all week.
