It’s down to the final four at the U18 Rogers Indoor Junior National Championships, with the quarter-finals wrapping up at Mayfair Parkway in Markham, Ont. on Wednesday. Among the players still in contention are defending champion Alejandro Tabilo and girls’ No. 1 seed Vanessa Wong.
In the boys’ draw, top-seeded Tabilo won 6-2, 6-2 over Sean Huynh in a battle of Ontarians to continue his incredible success at junior nationals. His semifinal foe will be Alexis Galarneau of Quebec, a 6-3, 6-3 victor against Alberta’s Joshua Peck.
The bottom half of the draw will see No. 2 seed David Volfson face off opposite Denis Shapovalov, both from Ontario. Volfson advanced via a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Ontario’s Victor Krustev and Shapovalov defeated Quebecer Nicaise Muamba 6-2, 6-1.
Wong lost just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sofija Zecevic in the girls’ quarter-finals and will next be challenged by another Ontarian in Natasha Irani, who advanced 6-1, 6-3 past Quebec’s Tiffany Lagarde. Also making the semifinals are Ontario’s Maria Patrascu and Teona Velehorschi, who both had to come back from a set down in their quarter-final matches. Patrascu beat Ontario’s Rhea Verma 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 while Telehorscho bounced back 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 against Anna Philp of Ontario.
