Julien Benneteau’s career will be extended for another day after the Frenchman defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of the Rolex Paris Masters on Monday.

For the second time this season in France, Benneteau got the better of Shapovalov thanks to an impressive serving performance. Earlier this year in Marseille, Benneteau defeated the 18-year-old Canadian 7-5, 6-4 without facing a break point. Today, he lost just 13 points on serve and faced only one break point in the final game and saved it.

Benneteau announced that he will retire from tennis following the Paris Masters. For his part, Shapovalov will conclude his 2017 campaign next week at the inaugural ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan, Italy.
