Next Gen stars Denis Shapovalov and Jared Donaldson took to Stadium Court in Delray Beach on Thursday. It was the first meeting between the two up-and-comers and it was Shapovalov who got the better of Donaldson with an emphatic 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4 comeback win to make the quarterfinals.

After exchanging back-to-back breaks in the early stages, Shapovalov and Donaldson firmly kept hold of their service games and made it into a tiebreak. Donaldson earned a double mini break to go up 4-1 but couldn’t back up his aggressive returns as Shapovalov came back for 4-3. But even at 6-6 Shapovalov netted a forehand to give Donaldson set point on serve, which he closed out with an ace.

The second set went in favour of the Canadian. Shapovalov upped his aggression and was able to break Donaldson for a second time in the match to go up 4-3 and would soon after serve out the set. Check out the awesome passing shot by Shapovalov below!

A tight third set threatened to go the distance but it was Shapovalov who continued to be the aggressor and he was awarded for it. Even at 4-4, Shapovalov earned double break point on Donaldson’s serve and was able to break for a chance to serve out the match.

Shapovalov would serve out the match at love. He hit 13 aces in the two and a half hour match.

This is Shapovalov’s first quarterfinal of the 2018 season. He will play the winner of Mikhail Youzhny or Taylor Fritz.
