The Steve Stevens Senior National Tennis Championships wrapped on Saturday with many players sweeping the doubles and singles events, starting with Andreanne Martin, head pro at the Mount Royal Tennis Club, who took home both the women’s over-45 singles and doubles title.
Martin defeated Lucie Aline Lean 6-1, 6-0 to win singles and, alongside partner Lyne Charbooneau, eliminated Deliana Matei and Johane Mui 6-0, 6-4 to win the doubles crown. Also sweeping her age category was Jennifer Bishop who took the singles and doubles crowns in the women’s over-40. The No. 1 seed handed Sophia Lynn Ronan, her doubles partner, a double bagel to take the singles title, then alongside Ronan, Bishop defeated Carman Nassif and Emily Webster 6-1, 6-0 to take the doubles title.
In the women’s over-35, No. 2 seed Cristina Popescu, a former Fed Cup player and top junior, upset No. 1 seed Kanta Murali 6-0, 6-1 to win the title, while No. 5 seed Mary Manley was triumphant in the over-55 category. Manley ousted No. 1 seed Erin Boynton 6-0, 6-0 in the semis, before defeating No. 4 seed Michelle Karis, a former seniors world championships quarter-finalist 6-3, 6-1 to secure the title. In the over-75 category, Inge Weber defeated Muffie Grieve 6-2, 6-0 to win the title for a second year in a row.
In one of the most competitive finals of the tournament, Olivier Borlée defeated Andrew Oxner in straight sets 7-6(5), 7-5 in the men’s over-40. Borlée tore his Achilles tendon at the 2014 Eastern Canadian Indoors and with relentless training, managed to get back into form within a year and a half, said Irwin Tobias, Seniors Committee Chair at Tennis Canada. World No. 1 Taras Beyko defeated No. 2 seed Jean Francois Mathieu, another former seniors world championships quarter-finalist, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to win the men’s over-45.
In the men’s-over 80, No. 1 seed Lorne Main defeated Andrew Gaty in straight sets 6-2, 6-0, while No. 1 seed Bob Bedard, Canada’s most decorated tennis player from the 50s, took home the title in the men’s over-85 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jean-Guy Violette.
