Poland’s Iga Swiatek and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina took home the singles titles on final Saturday at the National Bank International Junior Tennis Open in Repentigny.
After getting a walkover from walkover from Canadian Bianca Vanessa Andreescu in the semifinals, Swiatek faced second-seeded Serbian Olga Danilovic in the championship match. Danilovic jumped out to a quick lead and held onto it to take the first set 6-3. After being bothered by back pain on Friday, Danilovic called for the trainer between sets. Despite treatment, the 15-year-old was forced to retire two games into set two. For Swiatek, who sits at no. 21 on the world junior rankings, it was her first title of the season.
The boys’ singles final between Italy’s Liam Caruana and Davidovich Fokina was a highly entertaining affair. The Spaniard, who defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals, blanked his opponent in the first set tiebreak to take a 7-6(0) lead. The two continued to battle point for point, but it was ultimately Davidovich Fokina who came away with a 7-6(0), 7-6(5) victory to collect the first ITF Junior Circuit singles title of his career in six final appearances for the no. 30 ranked junior player in the world.
