Canada started off its 2015 ITF Super Seniors World Team Championships on Monday by posting a 1-3 record in round-robin play on the opening day of the tournament in Umag, Croatia.
The Jack Crawford men’s over-70 team captured the sole victory of the day, winning 2-1 over Switzerland. Shaheer Mikhail gave Canada a positive start, claiming a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Leo Hoegger. John Tibbits then assured his country of the win by taking a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Peter Schoch before Switzerland claimed the doubles rubber. Hoegger and Milan Makanec beat Ali Bacha and Jean Larose 6-2, 6-3. Canada currently sits in second in Group F, behind Great Britain who won 3-0 on Monday against Ireland.
Both the men’s over-75 and over-80 teams lost 3-0 in their respective opening ties. The men’s over-80 team, featuring Kar Liang, Lorne Main, and Morton Katz, fell to Great Britain while the men’s over-75 squad (Gaston Blais, Guido Weber, Horst Dammholz, and Rene Roptin) was bested by the United States.
The Canadian women’s over-65 team, featuring Patricia McLachlan, Mary-Ann Gaskin, Jean Martin, and Coby Dommasch, lost 3-0 to Australia.
One team has yet to start, with the men’s over-65 team playing its first tie of the week on Tuesday in the Britannia Cup.
