In a much-anticipated matchup between two of tennis’ brightest young stars, Austria’s Dominic Thiem defeated Denis Shapovalov in their first career meeting on Wednesday night at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, an ATP World Tour 500 event in Acapulco.

The tournament’s third seed and world no. 6 defeated the 18-year-old Canadian 6-2, 6-3 to reach the third round in a little over an hour.

Shapovalov found himself under pressure on serve consistently throughout the match, facing eleven total break points and getting broken on four occasions.

Shapovalov will now focus on doubles with Hyeon Chung before heading to Indian Wells for the BNP Paribas Open beginning next week.
