Top 5 off-court moments of 2016

What didn’t happen in 2016? It was definitely a year that kept us on our toes and anxious to see what was going to happen next within the tennis world.

When the players weren’t grinding out marathon matches, they were keeping fans entertained off the court. Here are some of our top off-court moments of 2016…

1. The NBA-All Star Game

The NBA All-Star Weekend made its way to Toronto for the first time ever and it was a huge deal for the city and all of Canada. Part of the All-Star tradition is the celebrity game, so it was only fair that Genie Bouchard and Milos Raonic got called to represent Team Canada.

Milos did THIS…

Genie, on the other hand, was the poor victim of Jason Sudeikis’ intimidating defence all night. Team Canada ended up defeating Team USA, so I guess we can understand the extra competitiveness that came out in the latter stages of the game!

2. Wedding bells

Flavia and Fabio. Ana and Bastien. Dominika and Miso. It seemed like almost everyone got married in 2016. ??

❤️❤️❤️ @pronovias

One of best stories of the year was about Cibulkova’s wedding – When she was doing so well at Wimbledon that she almost had to cancel her wedding! ?

3. Babies!

Victoria Azarenka announced that she is expecting a baby by the end of the year with her boyfriend. Azarenka had achieved the rare Sunshine Double this year (winning Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back) and was thereafter sidelined with a knee injury throughout the clay season. While fans expected the star to return to the court within a few weeks, Vika made an announcement that no one saw coming. We’ll all be on baby watch for the next little while ??

And more baby news – Andy Murray and his wife Kim welcomed a baby girl in February. It was a dream start to 2016 for Murray – he was the runner-up at the Australian Open and days later welcomed his first child. A strong start to the year was followed by a second Wimbledon victory, his second Olympic gold medal, and the World No. 1 ranking. Needless to say, 2016 was a pretty good year for Andy Murray.

(PS – Judy Murray… cue the “Awwww”)

4. Queen S joins Queen B

Serena Williams had an epic summer with Beyoncé. Between Serena’s surprise cameo in Beyoncé’s Lemonade video to the two joining forces on stage, their friendship became ultimate #FriendshipGoals!

When Serena wasn’t on stage with B, B was in the crowd watching Serena dominate on the court. These two were basically glued to the hip in 2016, and we loved every bit of it!

5. Canadians walk with legends

No big deal – Wayne Gretzky, David Beckham and Céline Dion were just a few of the big names that Denis, Genie and Milos got to hang out with in 2016. Just your average night out, right? (Okay, I’m totally jealous!!!)

Feel honored to have met my idol Wayne Gretzky tonight at the Maple Leafs game. #goleafsgo #nikecourt #wilson #biosteel
