The No. 1 seeds in both the boys’ and girls’ draws have made it through to the finals of their respective tournaments at the U18 Outdoor Rogers Junior National Championships. Semifinal play at Mississauga’s Ontario Racquet Club concluded on Thursday, as the championship rounds in singles and doubles are set to start on Friday.
In boys’ singles, top-seeded Jack Mingjie Lin cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 5 seed Ivan Mitric of Ontario. Mingjie Lin improved on last year’s result at the tournament, which saw the 17-year-old from Markham, Ont. fall to Félix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals.
This year, Mingjie Lin has looked dominant in his campaign to capture the 2016 outdoor junior title. Mingjie Lin has taken his last three matches on the road to the final in straight sets. His competition for the crown is Quebec’s Nicaise Muamba, who won the U16 indoor national title this past spring. The No. 2 seed rallied back from a dropped first set to punch his ticket to the final as well. Muamba brought down Quebec’s Dan Martin 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday morning.
On the girls’ side, Layne Sleeth celebrated her birthday in style. The now 15-year-old secured her spot in the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Isabelle Boulais, also from Ontario. Sleeth has not dropped a set en route to the championship match, but will face a tough competitor in the form of Ontario’s Alisia Stephanie Manolescu. The No. 5 seed recorded a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Rhea Verma of Ontario. Manolescu hopes her momentum continues, as she makes a bid to upset the No. 1 seed on Friday.
