The University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas have advanced into the Western Conference university tennis final after both their men’s and women’s teams finished first at the Prairie Regional event in Calgary over the weekend.
The Golden Bears posted a 5-0 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos and a 5-2 triumph opposite the University of British Columbia Okanagan to handily advance into the final. On the women’s side, the Pandas went 6-1 against the Dinos to earn their place in the final.
“[Tournament coordinator] Patrick Thomas and his volunteers should be commended for running an excellent championship on the weekend,” said University of Alberta head coach Russ Sluchinski. “The event was very well organized and professionally run, making for a memorable weekend for all the players and coaches participating.”
The Western Conference final will take place at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver on February 28. The Golden Bears will take on UBC while the Pandas will challenge Simon Fraser University. The winning men’s and women’s teams will earn a place in the National University Championships, occurring at Rexall Centre in Toronto during Rogers Cup presented by National Bank this August. University of Alberta is the defending champion.
