Vasek Pospisil came very close to capturing his first ATP Tour title on Sunday morning at the ATP 250 event in Montpellier, France. He put up a tough battle in the final, but was ultimately unable to overthrow the top seed and local favourite Gael Monfils, falling 7-5, 6-3.

This was the 29-year-old Canadian’s first tour level final since 2014, having had success on the Challenger tour the last few years. Despite stringing together a series of impressive victories earlier in the week, which included ousting David Goffin of Belgium and fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the tournament’s second and third seeds respectively, he had a tough task awaiting him on Sunday. Taking on Monfils for a sixth time Pospisil had never managed to take a set off the Frenchman.

Both players experienced some struggles on serve throughout the match, but it was Monfils who managed to convert on some of his break point opportunities, while the Canadian was unsuccessful on four occasions.


This was Pospisil’s best performance at an ATP tournament in a while, having spent six months rehabbing an injury in 2019. His run to the final will see him move up close to 30 spots in the rankings and hovering just outside the Top 100, ranked at no. 104. The last time the Canadian was ranked among the 100 best players was in February of 2019.

Up next for Pospisil is the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where he will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in the opening round.
