Milos Raonic is through to his first semifinal of the year thanks to an impressive 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Rafael Nadal at the Brisbane International on Friday.

Tested by the former world No. 1, Raonic climbed back from a set deficit to secure the win in two hours and 20 minutes. In the second and third sets, he saved all three break points he faced, with his service games getting better as the match went on to 90 per cent of first serve points won in the final set.

Next up for the world No. 3, the top seed and defending champion in Brisbane, is Grigor Dimitrov. The No. 7-seeded Bulgarian defeated Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals. Currently he leads Raonic in their head-to-head 2-1, but they haven’t faced off since 2014.

Raonic will take the court in an attempt to make his third straight Brisbane final on Saturday afternoon in Brisbane, not before 11:30 p.m. Friday night ET. Before that, Daniel Nestor and partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin will play their doubles semifinal versus Aussies Thanasi Kokkinakis and Jordan Thompson.

In other Canadian tennis news, Vasek Pospisil and Gabriela Dabrowski both had their deep runs at their respective tournaments in doubles come to an end on Friday.

Pospisil and partner Radek Stepanek just missed out on lifting a trophy in the first week of 2017 with a 6-4, 7-6(3) loss to Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin in the Doha championship match.

Over in Auckland, Dabrowski and China’s Zhaoxuan Yang were ousted in the semifinals by a score of 7-5, 6-2. They lost to Dutch-Czech duo Demi Schuurs and Renata Voracova. Dabrowski is currently the world’s No. 39-ranked player in doubles.
