Play heats up in Mexico for Canadian Junior teams

Canada’s Junior Fed Cup team swept the nation of Guatemala 3-0 on Friday, in the second day of North/Central Americal Final Qualifying action in Campeche, Mexico.

Alexandra Vagramov started off the day with a hard-fought 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4 win over Gabriela Rivera. Layne Sleeth then clinched the win for Canada with her 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Guatemala’s Rut Galindo.

Sleeth and Vikotoriya Tabunshcyk’s doubles victory against Galindo and Mariajose Hernandez completed the shutout, the Canadians won 6-1, 6-2 over their opponents.

They next play the undefeated Americans on Saturday.

The Canadian Junior Davis Cup team was also in action. They recorded a 2-1 win against the home favourites, Mexico on Friday.

Luka Vukovic and Taha Baadi each captured wins in their singles rubber. Vukovic solved Mexico’s Rafael De Alba 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 before Baadi cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sergio Molina.

The Mexico doubles duo of Molina and Rodrigo Corro defeated Baadi and Liam Draxl 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 but the Canadians had already secured the overall win.

In World Junior Tennis Final qualifying action, the U14 Canadian girls defeated Puerto Rico 3-0.

Rachel Kimiko Kryzyzak captured the first singles rubber over Yadalis Rodriguez 6-2, 6-4.  Melodie Collard also took her singles rubber versus Sara Snyder 6-2, 6-1. The next challenge for the U14 girls will come against the United States.

Canada’s U14 boys team fell 3-0 to the United States on Friday. They face Costa Rica on Saturday.
