Initial Ranking
Unranked players will become ranked once they accumulate at least one win and two losses against players who are already ranked over the course of 12 months. The process for obtaining a ranking involves the calculation of a temporary and initial ranking. The temporary ranking is an average of the points of opponents defeated and undefeated during competition in these first three (or more) matches. Once established, the system uses the player's temporary ranking as a starting point for determining point differentials between competitors and essentially calculating an initial ranking. Once an initial ranking has been established, the player's ranking will fluctuate as they win and lose matches in sanctioned tournaments. It is important to note that in the calculation of the initial ranking, wins and losses against players who have more than 300 points of the average of other wins and losses, will not count.

This rule is in place to prevent a player from being ranked too high or too low compared to their real level of play. For the same reason, wins and losses by default are not considered in the calculation of the temporary ranking, but are considered in the calculation of the initial ranking. Lastly, there is a manual ranking component available that allows administrators to rank players according to their performances even if they have not met the requirements for an initial ranking. This component is a useful tool that allows optimal flexibility to ensure the system accounts for many possible ranking scenarios. The FAQ section contains a detailed example demonstrating how the temporary and initial rankings are calculated.
