The 36th ITF Super Seniors World Individual Championships are underway in Umag, Croatia and a number of talented Canadians have continued their stay in Croatia, following the team tournament, to compete for individual titles.
Inge Weber upset No. 2 seed Burnett Herrick in Tueday’s second-round match of the women’s-over 80 draw in Umag. Weber captured a 6-2, 6-1 win over her American opponent and sees the two-time world champion advance into the quarter-finals. There, Weber meets Australia’s Joyce Rogers.
Weber also is competing in the women’s over-80 doubles. She paired up with compatriot Evelyn Hustwit, and the pair defeated Germany’s Marlies Jennis and Erzsebet Szentirmay of Hungary 6-0 6-0. In the quarter-finals, the Canadian duo will face Weber’s singles opponent from Tuesday, Burnett Herrick, and fellow American Judith Smith, the No. 2 seeds.
The No. 16 seed in the men’s over-70 singles draw looks to advance to the quarter-finals as well. Kenneth Dahl posted two consective 6-0, 6-0 victories over his second and third-round opponents to ease into the fourth round of competition. Tuesday’s win over Josef Moertl of Switzerland sets up Dahl to face No. 6 seed Antonio Claudi of Italy for a spot in the draw’s final eight.
In the semifinals of the women’s over-85 singles draw, No. 2 seed Rosemarie Asch prepares to take on Wies Schuitemaker-Spuyman of the Netherlands. Asch recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over France’s Helene Salvetat on Tuesday in Umag.
