Denis Shapovalov’s Miami Open debut ended with a sigh of relief and a fist pump, after a double fault from Serbian opponent Viktor Troicki resulted in the win for the 18-year-old Canadian.

The world No. 46 advanced to the second round following a nail-biting 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(6) victory over Troicki on Thursday in Miami.

After finding himself up 5-1 in the deciding third set, Shapovalov failed to capitalize on five match points before finally capturing the win in the tie-break. The match wrapped after two hour and twenty five minutes, and saw Shapovalov fire off seven aces in the contest.

Following the match, a relieved Shapovalov joked during the on-court interview that he would’ve “retired on the spot” had he blown the lead.

Thankfully, Shapovalov will be back in action against Damir Dzumhur in the second round. It will be the first career meeting between Shapovalov and the No. 24 seed.
