Denis Shapovalov picked up his first win of the season on Sunday night at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, an ATP World Tour 250 event.

The 18-year-old defeated Brazilian qualifier Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-3, 6-2 to set a second round encounter against Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro on Tuesday night.

If some of you are getting a feeling of déjà vu, that’s because Shapovalov had this same draw through two rounds last summer at the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank where he made an historic run to the semifinals. In Montreal, Shapovalov beat Dutra Silva in the first round after saving match points and then topped Del Potro in straight sets.

For her part, Eugenie Bouchard fell 6-4, 6-3 to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in her opening match at the Hobart International. She’s now headed to Melbourne for the Australian Open. Qualifying for the first Grand Slam of the season begins this week and will feature Canadians Françoise Abanda, Bianca Andreescu, Frank Dancevic, Filip Peliwo, Peter Polansky, Vasek Pospisil, Brayden Schnur, and Carol Zhao.
