On Saturday, 15-year-old Canadian Layne Sleeth was crowned champion of the Grade 2 ITF junior event in Cap d’Ail, France.
In the final, Sleeth defeated Jule Niemeier of Germany 7-6(7), 1-6, 6-4 to capture her first title of the season.
With the win, Sleeth, currently ranked No. 121 in the world, will crack the Top 100 on the ITF junior rankings for the first time in her career on Monday.
Two other Canadians competed in the main draw at Cap d’Ail and posted strong results. Carson Branstine, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, reached the quarter-finals while No. 265-ranked Sasha Vagramov, 15, competed in qualifying before also making it all the way to the round of eight. All three players will next compete in the Open ITF Junior d’Istres this week, another Grade 2 tournament in France.
