Swede Arvidsson too strong for second-seeded Canadian in quarter-final clash

Valérie Tétreault’s (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC – World No. 133) hopes for a fourth ITF singles title in 2009 were dashed Friday buy an in-form Sofia Arvidsson at the Saguenay National Bank Challenger, a $50,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) event currently underway at the Saguenay indoor tennis club.

Playing her second match in less than 24 hours, Tétreault fell 6-0, 6-3 to the seventh-seeded Swede who brought her ‘A’ game to the court for the much anticipated quarter-final. Arvidsson’s serve was virtually unbreakable and her deep, penetrating groundstrokes were too much for Tétreault to handle.

“My legs were heavy out there today so I didn’t move as well as I needed to,” Tétreault commented after the match. “I have to give a lot of credit to Sofia(Arvidsson), she played really well and never let me into the match.”

Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Heidi El Tabakh (Toronto, ON – World No. 167) put up a good fight in her round of eight encounter against fourth-seeded Severine Bremond Beltrame, but ultimately fell 7-6(2), 6-3.

Dubois gets double duty Friday evening

Top-seeded Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC – World No. 98) will take over the spotlight in Friday’s evening session when she goes up against fifth-seeded Russian Regina Kulikova with a berth opposite Bremond in Saturday’s semifinals on the line. Dubois will also play in the doubles semifinals with her partner Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC). The all-Canadian duo will go up against the Russian pair of Kulikova and Anastasia Pivovarova.
