Dubois eliminated from contention by Errani at the All-England Club
Daniel Nestor (Toronto) and Nenad Zimonjic began their Wimbledon title defense on the right foot on Tuesday at the All-England Club in London where The Championships, Wimbledon, the season’s third Grand Slam event, is currently underway.
Seeded second in the men’s doubles draw, the Canadian-Serbian duo punched their ticket for the second round after their opponents, Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi, were forced to retire in the second set of their opening round match. Nestor and Zimonjic were leading by a set and a break (6-2, 4-2) when they shook hands with the Italian pair. The defending Wimbledon champions await the winners of the match between Austrians Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer and Americans Robert Kendrick and Sam Querrey. Nestor made history one year ago, taking home the Wimbledon men’s doubles crown to become just the fourth man in the Open Era to complete the career Golden Slam.
Dubois comes up short against Errani
Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, Quebec) was unable to secure her maiden Grand Slam main draw win as the 22-year old fell 7-5, 6-2 to Italian Sara Errani, ranked no. 39 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings. Dubois raced out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set, taking advantage of her rattled adversary who had to call for medical attention after falling during the second game of the match. However, the world no. 104 could not maintain her level of play as Errani reeled off 11 of the final 13 games to book her spot in round two. At Wimbledon last year, Dubois came within one point of earning her first Grand Slam main draw win against Anna Chakvetadze before falling 8-6 in the third set.
Wozniak and Lisicki on track for Williams’ sisters clash
Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, Quebec) will attempt to avenge for her disappointing loss in singles by joining forces with Germany’s Sabine Lisicki to compete in the women’s doubles draw. The pair will face Maret Ani and Roberta Vinci in their first match on Wednesday or Thursday. A victory could pit them against Serena and Venus Williams in round two. The mighty sister duo has eight Grand Slam doubles titles to their credit to go along with two Olympic gold medals.
Nguyen opens with win in France
Edward Nguyen (Ottawa), a member of Tennis Canada’s National Training Centre (NTC) program, passed his first test at the “Pont des Générations”, a premier junior tournament being held in Pontet, France. The 15-year old defeated local hope Laurent Locali, seeded sixteenth, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round where he will take on another Frenchman Paul Cisti. The event, a category 1 competition on the Tennis Europe calendar, assembles the top U16 players in the world.
