We’re throwing back… to 2011.

Okay, it wasn’t that long ago, but it was a big year. Novak Djokovic was in the midst of a 70-6 season and Serena Williams was rediscovering her incredible form after returning from injuries and illnesses that kept her sidelined for over a year.

It was also the first year that the Rogers Cup ran concurrently in Toronto and Montreal. Previously, the men’s and women’s events were held in separate weeks, but in 2011 the tournaments were brought together to unify the experience for both pros and fans. The host cities continue to alternate between the ATP and WTA each year, with Toronto set to host the women in 2015 while the men take on Montreal.

In 2011, Djokovic continued his superlative year, besting American Mardy Fish in a three-set final.

Serena was unseeded for the tournament and had fallen to No. 80 in the world after time off spent recovering from blood clots in her lungs. Playing in just her fourth tournament back, Serena was clearly thrilled with the victory, a straight sets win over Sam Stosur.

Must also note: Roger Federer celebrated his 30th birthday during Rogers Cup in Montreal.
