Wozniak wins opener at Winnipeg Challenger

Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak won her opening match at the Winnipeg National Bank Challenger presented by Manshield Construction on Monday, defeating fellow Canadian Rosie Johanson 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. It was the first match for Wozniak, who received a wild card into the $25K ITF Pro Circuit event, since going under surgery to repair a shoulder injury almost a year ago.

In the second round, the former world No. 21 will face American Ingrid Neel, who upset No. 6-seeded Canadian Francoise Abanda 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Monday.

Two other Canadians fell in their first matches, with Gloria Liang dropping a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 decision to No. 4 seed Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and Katherine Sebov losing 6-4, 6-3 to No. 5 seed Kristie Ahn of the United States.

Among the players in action Tuesday will be Sharon Fichman against Michaela Gordon and Vanessa Wong, who will go up against No. 1 seed Jovana Jaksic of Serbia.

A joint event, main draw play for the $15,000 Winnipeg National Bank Futures presented by Manshield Construction will get underway on Tuesday. No. 8 seed Filip Peliwo headlines the action. He will go head-to-head with young Canadian Jack Van Slyke.
