Carol Zhao is into her third final of the season $100,000 Shenzhen Challenger.
The 22-year-old Canadian defeated Yuxuan Zhang in what was a gruelling two hour, 18 minute semi-final clash on Saturday. Zhao walked away with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
The players were nearly identical in all areas except for their winning percentage on second services points. Zhao was able to win 60% of her points while Zhang was a mere 44%. Zhao also had a slight advantage on her first serve, winning 73% of those points opposed to Zhang’s 68%.
Zhao earned herself 21 break point opportunities in the match but was only able to capitalize on two occasions – in the first and final sets. Zhao only surrendered her serve once to Zhang in the second set. In the end, Zhao won the match with 107 points to Zhang’s 102.
Zhao, who won the $25K Nanao title in September, is eyeing her second title of 2017 on Sunday when she faces no. 4 seed Fangzhou Liu. This will be the pair’s first meeting.
