Fifteen-year-old Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez joined her compatriots Filip Peliwo and Carol Zhao in the winners’ circle over the weekend, capturing her first junior title at the Grade 2 Raanana Open in Israel.
Fernandez went through the draw without dropping a set and lost a total of 26 games in six matches, including a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Anna Arkadianou of Greece in the final. The title propels her to a career-high junior ranking no. 218.
This win comes on the heels of Fernandez reaching her first Challenger quarter-final in Saguenay last month and becoming the first player born in 2002 to win a main draw match at a $25,000 Challenger in Jackson in April.
This week, Fernandez will look to make it two in a row at the HAP International Junior Tournament in Haifa, Israel where she won her opening round match on Monday.
