Despite getting the week off to a great start, the Canadian Junior Fed Cup squad will have to wait a while longer to take home the title. In their quarterfinal matchup against Russia, our homegrown talents gave it all they had but ultimately couldn’t keep up with their seasoned opponents.
Jada Bui, who played her best match since arriving in Hungary, won the first set of her match 7-5 after fighting her way back from set point. But injury got the better of her and she lost the next two (1-6, 2-6).
Leylah Annie Fernandez had to win the second clash to keep Canada in the race but suffered her first loss of the competition, falling in two sets (6-2, 6-1).
She then had to put disappointment aside and team up with Sarah-Maude Fortin in doubles to avoid a Russian sweep. The Canadians rose to the challenge and won 6-4, 6-2.
Fed Cup isn’t over for Canada just yet. The team will fight for fifth place overall as the girls take on Latvia on Saturday.
