It’s Canada facing host nation Croatia away in Osijek this weekend in Davis Cup World Group first round action.

Newly appointed Canadian captain Frank Dancevic leads Denis Shapovalov, Vasek Pospisil, Peter Polansky and Daniel Nestor against a strong Croatian side that includes world no. 3 and Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic and Next Gen star Borna Coric.

Update: Tie had ended. Croatia advance over Canada 3-1 to make the Davis Cup quarter-finals.

  • Pospisil earns 0-40 on Coric’s serve and breaks on a double fault for a 5-3 lead
  • Pospisil hits two aces in his service game to take the first set 6-3
  • Winners: Pospisil (8), Coric (3)
  • Net points: Pospisil (2/2), Coric (0/2)
  • 1st service points won: Pospisil (89%), Coric (67%)

Set 2: Coric wins the set 6-2

  • Coric breaks Pospisil at 15 to begin the set
  • Pospisil double faults to give Coric a double break lead and close the second set 6-2

Set 3: Coric wins the set 6-3

  • Coric breaks Pospisil to go up 2-0
  • Pospisil saves a break/set point on serve at 5-2, forcing Coric to serve out the third set

Set 4: Coric wins the set 6-2

  • Coric breaks Pospisil for a 2-1 lead
  • Coric earns 0-40 on Pospisil’s serve, breaks for a 5-2 lead
  • Coric serves out the match after 2 hours, 19 minutes
  • Coric – 18 winners/33 unforced errors; Pospisil – 17 winners/51 unforced errors
  • Croatia leads Canada 1-0

R2: 🇨🇦 Denis Shapovalov d. 🇭🇷 Viktor Galovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2

Set 1: Shapovalov wins the set 6-4

  • Shapovalov breaks in the opening game to lead 1-0
  • Shapovalov recovers from a 0-40 hole on serve to hold for 3-1

  • Shapovalov serves out the first set 6-4 after 35 minutes

Set 2: Shapovalov wins the set 6-4

  • Shapovalov earns 15-40 on Galovic’s serve at 4-4. The first is erased with an ace while Shapovalov draws an error to capitalize on his second opportunity
  • Shapovalov serves out the set 6-4. He saved 2/2 break points against his serve in the set (5/5 in the match)

Set 3: Shapovalov wins the set 6-2

  • Shapovalov breaks for the third time in the match to go up 3-2

  • Shapovalov earns around two break points at 4-2 and breaks again to go up 5-2
  • Shapovalov, serving for the match at 5-2, recovers from 0-40 and holds serve to win the match in 1 hour, 50 minutes
  • Winners: Shapovalov (22), Galovic (10)

Set 1: Nestor/Pospisil win the set 6-2

  • Nestor/Pospisil earn the first break of the match to go up 2-1
  • Nestor plays a brilliant return game and the Canadians break Croatia again to go up 4-1

  • Nestor, serving for the set, saves break points and gives Canada a 6-2 lead

Set 2: Nestor/Pospisil win the set 6-3

  • The Canadians break Team Croatia for the third time in the match to go up 2-1
  • Nestor smacks a return winner to give Canada their second break of the set – and fourth overall
  • Canada takes the set 6-3 and has a 2-0 set lead on Croatia

Set 3: Cilic/Dodig win the set 6-4

  • Cilic serving at 2-1, 40-0, the Canadians rally to get to deuce and break the Croatians for the 5th time in the match
  • Canada is broken at love (broken for the first time in the match) and the third set goes back on serve
  • Team Croatia plays some solid return games and recovers from a 4-1 deficit to go up a break at 5-4
  • Dodig serves out the set 6-4

Set 4: Cilic/Dodig win the set 7-5

Set 5: Cilic/Dodig win the set 6-2

  • Croatia leads Canada 2-1 after Day 2

 

Day 3 – February 4

Set 2: Coric wins the set 6-4

  • Coric breaks Shapovalov for a 4-3 lead
  • Coric serves out the set 6-4

Set 3: Coric wins the set 6-4

  • Shapovalov fights off a break point in his opening service game
  • On serve at 4-4, Coric works up a 0-40 lead and breaks Shapovalov for a third time with a passing shot
  • Coric serves out the match, ending the rubber with a forehand winner
  • Croatia defeats Canada 3-1 in the Davis Cup first round tie
