Men’s qualifying at the Australian Open gets underway Tuesday night in Melbourne. In total, 8 Canadians will be vying for a place in the main draw of the first Grand Slam event of the season.
Frank Dancevic, Filip Peliwo, Peter Polansky, Vasek Pospisil, and Brayden Schnur will begin their quests tonight.
New Canadian Davis Cup captain Dancevic will face Spaniard Adrian Menendez-Maceiras for the second time after winning their first meeting. For his part, Peliwo will take on Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, Polansky will go up against Portugal’s Joao Domingues, Pospisil will face Lorenzo Giustino of Italy, and Schnur will take on India’s Yuki Bhambri in a rematch of their Davis Cup encounter in Edmonton last fall.
Women’s qualifying begins Wednesday night with Françoise Abanda, Bianca Andreescu, and Carol Zhao taking the court.
Eugenie Bouchard, Milos Raonic, and Denis Shapovalov have earned direct entry into the main draw and will learn their first round opponents on Wednesday night during the official draw ceremony.
