A total of four Canadians are into the second round of the Junior Australian Open after Felix Auger-Aliassime and Katherine Sebov posted opening round wins on Sunday. They join Bianca Andreescu and Jack Mingjie Lin who earned their spots a day earlier.
Auger-Aliassime, seeded No. 4 in the boys’ draw, secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Andres Gabriel Ciurletti of Italy. In the next round, Auger-Aliassime will play China’s Tao Mu.
No. 15 seed Sebov dropped just two games in a smooth 6-0, 6-2 triumph over India’s Mihika Yadav. Her next challenger will be Aussie Petra Hule.
No. 3 seed Charlotte Robillard-Millette was the only Canadian not to advance. A quarter-finalist in Melbourne a year ago, she was upset by Italian Ludmilla Samsanova 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.
In doubles action, No. 1 girls pair Andreescu and Robillard-Millette won via a 6-4, 6-2 win against Greek-New Zealander team Eleni Christofi and Jade Lewis while the all-Canadian boys’ team of Auger-Aliassime and Lin fell 6-3, 6-4 to Calin Manda of Romania and Louis Tessa of France. Sebov also was ousted in doubles as she and Belarussian partner Vera Lapko, seeded No. 3, were eliminated by Taiwanese-Japanese duo I-Hsuan Cho and Ayumi Miyamoto 6-7(1), 6-4, 10-5.
