The Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup finals are being contested this week in Budapest, Hungary and the Canadian trio of Sarah-Maude Fortin, Leylah Annie Fernandez and Jada Bui have impressed since the start of the competition.
After earning a spot in the finals this past April thanks to a victory over Puerto Rico, Canada’s Junior Fed Cup team has advanced to the quarter-finals of the event which brings together the top 16 under 16 teams in the world.
Canada opened with a 2-1 win over the host team from Hungary after Bui and Fernandez triumphed in the decisive doubles match 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. They followed that up with a 3-0 sweep of Argentina on the strength of singles wins by Bui and Fernandez to book their place in the final eight. Canada wrapped up round robin play on Thursday with a 2-1 victory over Indonesia to secure first place in their group.
They will face Russia on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.
A tougher road for the boys
Meanwhile, the Canadian Junior Davis Cup squad of Ilya Tiraspolsky, Joshua Lapadat and Antoine Marleau finished third in their round robin group behind Italy and Japan. They will continue to play to determine their overall placing in the competition.
