On Wednesday, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) held the official draw of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Qualifiers. The Canadian squad will take on Switzerland in Switzerland on February 7 and 8, 2020. The name of the site and choice of surface will be announced at a later date.

Last April, Canada fell 4-0 to the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Qualifiers at Agrofert Arena in Prostejov. The nation disputed its first World Group Qualifiers since 2015 after overpowering the Netherlands in the initial round of the World Group II ties in February. Bianca Andreescu emerged as the star of the showdown, winning her two singles matches en route to a 4-0 landslide.

Canada will now fight in the Qualifiers to earn a spot in the Finals in Budapest in April 2020. The new Fed Cup format features a qualifying round  between eight seeded and eight unseeded nations, with the winners moving on to the Finals. The 2019 Fed Cup finalists—France and Australia—are automatically entered into the Finals, along with host country Hungary and the Czech Republic, which was awarded a wildcard from the Fed Cup Committee and ITF board.

The tie marks the 6th meeting between the two nations, with Canada winning 3 meetings versus 2 for Switzerland.

Canada is currently ranked No. 13 in the Fed Cup rankings. Switzerland is 9th.
