Vanessa Wong leads the semifinal field at the U18 Indoor Rogers Junior National Championships, taking place this week at Mayfair East and Mayfair Parkway in Markham, Ont.

The No. 1 seed of the girls’ draw, Wong advanced via a 6-1, 6-2 win over qualifier Emma Miceli. Wong is going for her second straight U18 indoor championship after winning it last year. The 17-year-old has won a junior national title in all four age categories – U12, U14, U16, and U18.

In the semifinals, she will take on fellow Ontario native Natasha Sengphrachanh, who posted an identical 6-1, 6-2 score line in the quarter-finals over No. 5 seed Ariana Arseneault.

The bottom half of the draw will pit Ontarian Ines Milosevic versus British Columbian Sasha Vagramov. Milosevic, who earlier ousted No. 3 seed Isabelle Boulais in the second round, earned her spot with a very close 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-5 triumph opposite Rhea Verma. For her part, Vagramov won 7-5, 6-3 versus No. 5-seeded Anca Craciun.

Nicaise Muamba U16 indoor junior nationals 2016

On the boys’ side, Gabriel Champoux of Quebec secured a big upset by eliminating top-seeded Victor Krustev 6-4, 7-6(5) in Wednesday’s quarter-finals. His semifinal foe will be No. 9 seed Clarke Wilson of Ontario, a 7-6(5), 6-3 victor against Liam Draxl.

Christian Lakoseljac and Nicaise Muamba will be the second semifinal pairing. No. 2-seeded Muamba, who won the U16 national title just last week in his home province of Quebec, received a walkover from Ivan Mitric while Lakoseljac posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Dan Martin.

The U18 Indoor Rogers Junior National Championships are taking place at Mayfair East and Mayfair Parkway in Markham, Ont. and will conclude with the finals on Friday. For the complete draws and results, please visit tc.tournamentsoftware.com.
