Leylah Annie Fernandez plays Madrid Open 2022

Canada’s Leylah Annie Fernandez and No. 17 seed was upset 6-4, 6-4 by Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday.

Fernandez went down an early break that proved to be the decider in the first set. Even though Teichmann gave up three double faults in the first set, Fernandez struggled with the Swiss player’s power and pace on both wings.

The two left-handers played with plenty of energy as the shade took over the court during the second set. Fernandez kept composure on serve not giving up a double fault while winning 60 per cent of second serve points.  Despite digging in and breaking Teichmann’s serve, moving her around the court, Fernandez was not able to hold on to the momentum ultimately bowing out of the tournament losing the second set 6-4.

The Montreal native Fernandez will now turn her focus to the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome that begins May 9th.
