The U18 Rogers Indoor Junior Nationals girls’ and boys’ finals took place on Friday at the Mayfair Clubs in Toronto, Ontario.
First up was the boys’ final which opposed Chih Chi Huang of British Columbia, the tournament’s top seed, and Nick Lagaev of Ontario, the second seed. In the opening set, it was Huang who went up an early break and took the set. The BC native seemed to be headed to a relatively quick victory, going up another early break in the second, dictating play throughout most of the match. Lagaev had other plans, as he fought back from a break down twice in the second set. He was ultimately unable to complete the comeback. Huang was crowned champion, firing an ace to conclude the match 6-3, 7-6(4).
Huang has had a successful start to the 2018 season, as he notably got his very first singles points on the professional tour by winning his opening round match at the Sherbrooke Futures in March. The following week he reached the second round of qualifications at the Drummondville National Bank Challenger.
On the girls’s side, it was an all-Ontario final featuring Natasha Sengphrachanh, the tournament’s top seed, and Jada Bui, the third seed. Bui was fresh off her victory at the 2018 U16 Indoor Junior Nationals just two weeks ago. After dominating the first set, the top seed experienced difficulties in the second, with her opponent controlling the pace. In the decider, Sengphrachanh was more consistent in her play and was eventually crowned champion with her 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory.
Sengphrachanh was also the U16 Outdoor Junior Nationals champion in 2016.
In doubles, the second seeds Justin Boulais and Peter Kuszynski defeated the third seeds Ryan Navarro and Marko Stakusic 6-4, 6-4 to take home the title. The girls’ top seeds Ariana Arseneault and Jada Bui were crowned champions with their 6-0, 6-4 victory over the team of Karin Hamilton and Kirsten Prelle.
