Last week, the Fischer Indoor Junior Nationals made its long-awaited return after a two-year hiatus due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UBC Tennis Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, played host to the U12 age group, and this past Friday, winners were crowned in both boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles events.

The tournament saw top-seeded Joyce Geng secure the girls’ singles and doubles titles, and fifth-seeded Deniz Karabulut win the boys’ singles event.

In the girls’ singles final, B.C.’s Geng faced Jasmine Li of Ontario for the national title. It was the first meeting between the two talented youngsters, and it was Geng who managed to come out on top in a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set victory. It wasn’t the only hardware Geng would leave with, as the B.C. native, alongside her teammate Amy Shen, defeated Quebec sisters Catherine Xie and Sophia Xie in the doubles final.

The boys’ singles final also featured a player from B.C. and Ontario. However, it was the Ontarian that emerged victorious this time around. Karabulut, the tournament’s fifth seed, defeated B.C.’s Luca Vicol in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Karabulut fell just shy of sweeping the podium, falling to Quebec’s Marc-Édouard L’Allier and Joachim Marx in the doubles final. Also finishing as a runner-up in the boys’ doubles draw was Danylo Glinnyi of Ontario.
