The Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II first round tie between Canada and Romania is sure to bring a lot of excitement to Cluj-Napoca this weekend. Carol Zhao and Bianca Andreescu lead the way for Team Canada in singles while Australian Open champion Gabriela Dabrowski and Katherine Sebov pair up in doubles action.


Day 1 – February 10

Live on Sportsnet Now – 6 a.m. ET

R1: 🇷🇴 Sorana Cirstea d. 🇨🇦 Carol Zhao 6-2, 6-2

Set 1Cirstea wins the set 6-2

  • Zhao is broken in her opening service game and trails 2-0
  • Zhao breaks back at 30 to get back on serve, 2-1
  • Cirstea breaks again for a 4-2 lead
  • Zhao is broken once again at 2-5
  • Romania wins the set 6-2

Set 2: Cirstea wins the set 6-2

  • Cirstea breaks Zhao for a third consecutive time to go up 2-0
  • Serving to stay in the match, Zhao is broken at 2-5
  • Romania wins the set 6-2

Romania leads the Fed Cup tie 1-0 


R2: 🇨🇦 Bianca Andreescu vs. 🇷🇴 Irina-Camelia Begu

Set 1: Begu wins the set 6-3

  • Andreescu gets the first break of the match to go up 2-1

  • Begu gets to 0-40 on Andreescu’s next service game but the Canadian brings the game to deuce. Begu eventually gets the break to get back on serve
  • Begu breaks again for a 5-3 lead and serves out the set
  • Romania wins the set 6-3

Set 2: Andreescu wins the set 7-6(4)

  • Begu gets an early break to move ahead 2-1
  • Andreescu overturns a call with a correct challenge and gets back on serve at 3-3
  • Second set goes to a tiebreak
  • Andreescu gets the first mini break to go up 4-2
  • Begu draws an error from Andreescu to get back on serve, 4-4
  • Begu puts a forehand into the net to give Andreescu the lead at 6-4 & two set points
  • Andreescu capitalizes on her first set point after Begu double faults
  • Canada wins the set 7-6(4)

Set 3: Begu wins the set 6-2

  • Begu breaks Andreescu to lead 2-0 in the final set
  • Andreescu commits an error and sends a drop shot into the net, giving Begu a second break and the match

Romania leads Canada 2-0 after Day 1


Day 2 – February 11

Live on Sportsnet Now – 5 a.m. ET

R3: 🇨🇦 Katherine Sebov vs. 🇷🇴 Irina-Camelia Begu

Set 1: Begu wins the set 6-2

  • Begu breaks Sebov in the opening game to go ahead 1-0
  • Begu breaks again to go ahead 3-0 in 14 minutes. Sebov has been brought to deuce in both service games so far
  • Sebov saves two break points to get her first hold of the match at 4-1
  • Begu maintains her two break lead and takes the opening set
  • Romania wins the set 6-2

Set 2: Begu wins the set 6-4

  • Begu breaks in the opening game to take a 1-0 lead
  • Sebov breaks at love to even the second set at 3-3
  • Begu breaks Sebov right back to go up 4-3
  • Sebov holds from 0-30 to hold serve and force Begu to serve for the win
  • Romania wins the set 6-4

Romania advances to the next round. Canada will fall back to the Fed Cup World Group II Play-offs. 


R4: 🇨🇦 Gabriela Dabrowski/Carol Zhao  vs. 🇷🇴 Ana Bogdan/Raluca Olaru

Set 1: Bogdan/Olaru win the set 6-4

  • Dabrowski puts away a smash to give Canada the first break and to go up 4-2
  • Loose errors from Zhao and a netted volley by Dabrowski put Romania back on serve, 4-3
  • Romania breaks again as Bogdan puts a lob on the baseline, 5-4
  • Romania ends the set by winning 4 games in a row
  • Romania takes the set 6-4

Set 2: Dabrowski/Zhao win the set 6-1

  • Romania recovers from 0-40 to get to deuce but Canada earns a hard-fought break of serve to go up 3-1
  • The Canadians earn a double break lead to go up 5-1
  • Zhao serves out the set for Canada to get on even terms
  • Canada takes the set 6-1

Set 3: Live Now

  • 10-point match tiebreak to decide the winner
  • Canada earns 4 match points at 9-6
  • Zhao puts away an overhead winner on match point
  • Canada wins the set 10-6

Canada wins their first match of the weekend but lose 3-1 to Romania.
