MARTIN INTO SENIORS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS QUARTERS; FOUR CANADIANS ELIMINATED
May 2, 2014

Andreanne Martin advanced into the quarter-finals of the women’s over-45 draw at the ITF Seniors World Individual Championships on Thursday, while the four other Canadians remaining in their respective singles events – Kateryna Filyus, Jennifer Bishop, Taras Beyko, and Jean-Francois Mathieu – were eliminated in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Martin ousted Chilean Manola Murillo 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 to earn a place in the round of eight, where she will play American Jenny Klitch. She is also still alive in the mixed doubles event, as she and Canadian Joachim Nierfeld are in the quarter-finals.

In the women’s over-40 tournament, Filyus was defeated by top-seeded Tzvetelina Nikolova of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter-finals and No. 6-seeded Bishop was ousted by No. 2 seed and former world champion Ana Salas-Lozano of Spain 6-2, 6-1.

“If I was to be taken out by anyone in the quarters of the world championships I'm glad it was by this former world champion,” Bishop said. “She is a great competitor and a pleasure to play. Now it’s time to focus on the quarter-finals of doubles and mixed. Go Canada!”

Both Filyus and Bishop are still alive in the doubles event. Bishop and fellow Canadian Tina Blaskovic are the No. 3-seeded pair and are into the quarter-finals, while Filyus and Estonian partner Margit Aardmaa are also in the round of eight. Bishop and Canadian Benjamin Woo are the No. 4-seeded pair in the over-40 mixed doubles, and will play their quarter-final match on Friday.

On the men’s side, No. 1 seed and defending champion Beyko was upset in the quarters by American Eoin Collins 6-1, 6-2 in the men’s over-45 draw and Mathieu lost a tough 7-6(4), 6-4 battle to Dutchman Frank Vermeer.

In other doubles action, Sherry Buller and American partner Carolina Blouin are in the quarter-finals of the women’s over-35 draw, with Woo and Swiss Alexandre Blaettler into the men’s over-40 third round. Three Canadians are in the women’s over-45 quarters, pair Carol Lau and Rosie Schaich as well as Alison Hannah-Taylor and Dutch teammate Wilhelmine Pauline Noteboom Veerman. Denis Dumas and Brit Sue Webb will be competing for a semifinal position in the over-50 mixed doubles, and Canadian Len Simard is through to the third round in men’s over-55 event with American Whitney Kraft. In the women’s over-55 doubles event, Madeleine Berube and Michelle Karis are into the quarter-finals, with Brenda Cameron and Cora Wills hoping to join them with a second-round win on Friday.
