The Swiss Tennis Federation announced on Tuesday that the upcoming Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Qualifiers tie between Canada and Switzerland will take place at the Swiss Tennis Arena in Biel, in Switzerland, and will be disputed on an indoor hard court. The choice of surface was made by the Swiss team for the tie that will take place on February 7 and 8. The player nominations will be announced at a later date.

This will be the sixth meeting between these two teams, with Canada winning three of the five previous ties. The last encounter dates back to 2004 when the Swiss defeated the Canadian team with a tight 3-2 victory in the World Group play-off that took place in Dorval, Quebec. Canada is currently ranked no. 13 in the rankings after losing out to the No. 1 ranked Czech team by a score of 4-0 in the World Group play-off tie in April. The Canadian team was made up of Leylah Annie Fernandez (Laval, QC), Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC), Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa, ON) and Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON).

For their part, Switzerland is currently ranked no. 9 in the world and are coming off a tight 3-2 loss in a World Group play-off against the Americans this past April. The nation’s best result was back in 1998 when they finished runner-up to Spain in a tie that was decided in a decisive double’s match.

The winner of this upcoming tie will earn a spot in the Fed Cup Finals set to take place in Budapest in April 2020.
