Top seeds to play for U12 national titles in Calgary

No. 1 seeds Daria Tomashevskaya and Ashton Cross, both from Ontario, have advanced into their respective finals at the U12 Rogers Indoor Junior National Championships thanks to semifinal victories at The Tennis Academy in Calgary on Friday.

Tomashevskaya defeated fellow Ontarian Rachel Krzyzak 6-3, 6-3 to earn her place in the final. Her opponent will be No. 2-seeded Quebecer Melodie Collard, a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Dasha Plekhanova of Ontario in the semifinals.

On the boys’ side, Cross will take on No. 3 Marko Stakusic of Ontario for the title. Cross eliminated Alberta’s Ghouse Faisal 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals while Stakusic advanced via a 6-1, 6-4 triumph opposite No. 2-seeded Ontarian Akhil Malik.

It will actually be battle between doubles partners for the boys’ title, as Cross and Stakusic earlier teamed up to claim the doubles crown. They won 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 over Faisal and Newfoundland’s Aiden Drover-Mattinen in the final. The girls’ doubles champions are Krzyzak and Tomashevskaya, 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 winners against Quebec’s Juliette Begin and Collard.
