It was a good day for the No. 3 seeds at the U12 Indoor Rogers Junior National Championships in Calgary on Thursday, as Jaden Weekes and Annabelle Xu both upset the top seeds to earn their place in the finals.

Quebec’s Weekes ousted No. 1 seed Stefan Simeunovic 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals of the boys’ draw to set up a meeting with Lachlan Robertson, the No. 2 seed from British Columbia. Robertson was a 6-0, 7-5 victor over the unseeded Aron Pilbart. Both Weekes and Robertson have yet to drop a set at the tournament.

In the girls’ draw, Xu posted a hard-fought 7-6(4), 6-2 win over top-seeded Dasha Plekhanova of Ontario. Xu, from Quebec, will now face No. 2 seed Danielle Tuhten from BC for the championship. Tuhten advanced via comeback triumph against No. 9 Mia Kupres of Alberta by a score of 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Doubles champions also were crowned on Thursday. Plekhanova came out a winner here, as she teamed with Maria Popova to defeat Sarah Liu and Victoria Mboko 6-2, 6-1 in an all-Ontario final. The boys’ grand finale saw Weekes triumph again, as he and fellow Quebecer Christophe Clement captured a 6-3, 6-4 victory opposite BC’s Christopher Radloff and Henry Ren.

Taking place at The Tennis Academy in Calgary, the U12 Indoor Rogers Junior National Championships will wrap on Friday with the two singles finals.
