This past week, the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto played host to the 2021 U18 Fischer Outdoor Junior Nationals. Canada’s most prominent up-and-coming athletes battled throughout the week for a shot at the National title in both boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles events. In the end, the tournament saw third-seed Aram Noroozian of British Columbia hoist the boys’ singles trophy, and Orly Ogilvy of Ontario secure the girls’ singles title.
The boys’ singles final was a Western Canadian affair as British Colombia’s Noroozian faced off against Kirtan Patel of Saskatchewan. Noroozian, who dropped only a single set en route to the finals, made light work of his opponent in a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Patel simply couldn’t match the left-handed British Columbian’s level of play in today’s contest. It was just the first meeting between the two highly-talented teens.
In the girls’ singles finals, 15-year-old Ogilvy of Ontario defeated Martyna Ostrzygalo of Alberta 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. The Ontario native soared by the third and second seeds – in the quarters and semis respectively – and harnessed that momentum as she triumphed over top-seed Ostrzygalo to claim the title. After dropping her quarter-final match to Ostrzygalo at the U16 event last week, Ogilvy was able to turn the tables on her opponent this time to cap off a phenomenal week.
In doubles, the No. 1 seeds took on the No. 2 seeds in both the girls’ and boys’ finals. On the girls’ side, tournament top-seeds Reece Carter (BC) and Dharani Niroshan (ON) defeated Sarah L’Allier (QC) and Ogilvy while second-seeds Noroozian and Sasha Rozin (ON) ousted top-seeds Henry Ren (BC) and Stefan Simeunovic (ON) to win the boys’ doubles event.
“Well done to all of the players for their performances at the U18 Fischer Junior Nationals in Toronto, Ontario,” said George Fischer, Tennis Canada donor and event funder. “Particular congratulations must go to the boys and girls singles champions Aram Noroozian and Orly Ogilvy respectively, as well as the boys doubles champions Aram Noroozian and Sasha Rozin and girls doubles champions Reece Carter and Dharani Niroshan. Huge thanks to Tennis Canada for putting on the event in such difficult circumstances due to the impact of COVID-19.”
