Quarter-final action at the National Bank International Junior Tennis Open at parc Larochelle in Repentigny featured a trio of Canadians in Benjamin Sigouin (Vancouver, BC), Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (Toronto, ON), and Félix Auger-Aliassime (Montreal, QC).

The first match of the evening session pitted defending champion Andreescu against Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez of Mexico. Despite a rain delay at 4-2 in the opening set, the 16-year-old Canadian cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win to book her spot in the semifinals.

“This was one of my best matches of the year, everything was working, and I felt good on court. I hope I can play my next match the same way,” Andreescu said after the match.

On the boys’ side, Auger-Aliassime went up against Toru Horie of Japan. Trailing 4-1 in the first set, the Canadian fought his way back with an aggressive style of play to win the opening frame and he went to take the match in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. For his part, Sigouin was defeated 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 by Italy’s Liam Caruana.

In Friday’s semifinals, top-seeded American Ulises Blanch will face Caruana while Auger-Aliassime will take on Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. In the girls’ semis, Andreescu will meet Iga Swiatek of Poland.
