Quarter-final action set for Friday at U-16 Rogers Outdoor junior Nationals

The best Canadian tennis athletes under the age of 16 are currently competing at Tennis Outaouais Performance in Gatineau, Quebec. The talented draw of 64 is now down to just 8 remaining competitors on both the girls and boys sides. The quarter-finals will commence on Friday with the following matches:

Boys:

Liam Draxl vs. Gabriel Diallo

Ontarian Liam Draxl bested Rassam Yazdi in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the quarter-finals. The 2016 U-16 Indoor doubles champion will now face Gabriel Diallo of Quebec. Diallo defeated Isaac Ogilvy 6-4, 3-0 (ret.) to secure a quarter-final berth.

Samuel Paquette vs. Daniel Fainblum

Quebec’s Samuel Paquette bested Ontario’s Dan Pergel 6-3, 6-0 in the third round to secure his spot in the quarters. Paquette will now face Daniel Fainblum of Ontario who bested his third round opponent Justus Alexandre Agbo of Quebec 6-3, 6-1.

Sebastian Collard vs. Michael Pawlowicz

Collard of Quebec took on Tim Zelikovsky of Ontario in the third round and won the match 6-0, 6-1. He now faces another Ontarian in Michael Pawlowicz. Pawlowicz bested Neil Kandhai in a third round thriller, advancing to the quarter-final with a 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 victory.

Ethan Meanchos vs. Alex-Antoine Marquis

Ontario’s Meanchos upset U-14 indoor champion Joshua Lapadat in the second round before taking on the sole Newfoundlander in the tournament, Aiden Drover-Mattinen. It took three sets but Meanchos bested Drover-Mattinen 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. He will now face Alex-Antoine Marquis of Quebec. Marquis won the U-16 outdoor doubles title in 2016 and defeated Matis De Sousa Lecorre 6-1, 6-1 in the last round.

Girls:

Rachel Krzyzak vs. Rachel Hanford

Ontario’s Rachel Krzyzak bested Quebecor Élisabeth Desmarais 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarter-final. She will face Rachel Hanford also of Ontario, Hanford took her third round match 6-0, 6-1 to clinch a quarter-final berth.

Jada Bui vs. Érica Di Battista

Two 2016 U-14 champions will battle in this quarter-final match as singles champion Jada Bui faces doubles champion Érica Di Battista. Bui bested Annabelle Xu in the previous round, Xu won both the U-12 indoor and outdoor titles in 2016. Di Battista defeated Mélodie Collard 1-6, 3-4(ret.) after Collard retired in the second set.

Alexandra Mikhailuk vs. Oleksandra Gorchanyuk

Ontario’s Mikhailuk defeated Reece Carter of Manitoba 6-1, 6-1 in the third round to advance. Her quarter-final opponent is fellow Ontarian Oleksandra Gorchanyuk. Gorchanyuk received a walkover as her third round opponent Monika Popovic was unable to compete.

Sarah-Maude Fortin vs. Corina Spasojevic 

Sarah-Maude Fortin defeated the 2016 U-14 outdoor champion in straight sets as she bested Daria Tomashevskaya 6-4, 7-6(2) in the third round. Quebec’s Fortin now faces Corina Spasojevic of Ontario. Spasojevic bested her third round opponent Juliette Begin 6-4, 6-3.
